Throughout his detention, Kaswaswa was beaten during interrogations and threatened with death.Īfter a nearly year-long trial, the Country Court in Juba dismissed the case due to a lack of sufficient evidence and Kaswaswa went back to Malawi. On December 7th, 2018 he was extradited to South Sudan where he was moved from one detention centre to another, including a shipping container, until his release in March 2020. had filed charges against him alleging criminal breach of trust and the theft of USD 350,000 from the company. But in the meanwhile, Trinity Energy Ltd. He was travelling to approach the Embassy of Malawi in Tanzania to explain Trinity’s illicit activities and, fearing for his safety, to leave South Sudan. On October 26th, 2018, Kaswaswa was en route to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, when he was arrested at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda and detained. Kaswaswa helped to show that Trinity was involved in multiple irregular activities: it operated suspicious transactions including using the black market to exchange currencies, issued suspicious and fake invoices, paid government officials without signatures, and provided “loans” to government ministries. It’s time to change the whole whistleblowing ecosystem.” “ These disgraceful reprisals must stop as someone like Biswick should be hailed as the hero he is. “ Biswick has been abducted, detained, and tortured in an effort to silence him for doing the right thing as a chartered accountant respecting ethics”, said Pusetso Morapedi, PPLAAF’s Southern Africa Director. These should be used immediately to protect Kaswaswa. Malawi lacks a comprehensive whistleblower protection act but does have a number of statutes and laws addressing whistleblower protection, including anonymity, protection from retaliation, and punitive measures for retaliation against whistleblowers. I am supposed to be fair in all the dealings and ensure that all transactions are done at arm’s length.” “As a chartered accountant, I am supposed to be ethical, have high levels of integrity and must be honest. “The corrupt activities were against my individual values and my professional ethics”, Biswick Kaswaswa said. He later helped The Sentry reveal red flags for illicit business practices, including bribery, tax evasion, and trade-based money laundering. After he began working to improve the system, he experienced resistance. Shortly after his contract started, Kaswaswa uncovered a complete lack of financial management regulations and policies. Kaswaswa relocated from Malawi to Juba, South Sudan for the position in 2018. PPLAAF assisted Kaswaswa, a former finance officer for South Sudanese company Trinity Energy Ltd, with legal and security support and facilitated psycho-social help as he worked to reintegrate into society. (Johannesburg, February 21, 2023) – Malawi authorities must protect Chartered Accountant Biswick Kaswaswa, who blew the whistle on his employer in 2018 and was subsequently charged with criminal breach of trust, imprisoned, and tortured, the Platform to Protect Whistleblowers in Africa ( PPLAAF) said today.Ī new report published today by US-based investigative group The Sentry shows that with the support of the South Sudanese Government, a loan deal between Trinity and a regional bank, “ enabled powerful individuals to benefit from the manipulation of business worth hundreds of millions of dollars.” Whistleblower Biswick Kaswaswa revealed a manipulation of business worth hundreds of millions of dollars 1/7/2024 0 Comments Italys religion dino lingoWhile I couldn’t find any mention of this product on the actual Baby Einstein website, Amazon does carry it. I believe our suburban, non-Arab parents would be shocked at how similar their core parenting values are to that of their Arab counterparts. From the time a child is born, parents begin to instill in their child a passion for their identity within the family and the importance of respecting older generations. In fact, there aren’t many cultures more immersed in tradition and family life than that of the Arab culture. Like the true researcher I am, I dove into the Arab culture and found there are boundless ways children can benefit from a quick immersion into Arab life. Fear buries curiosity and learning under a cloak of self-doubt. Fear is not something we want our daughter to associate with the world and its marvelous cultural differences. The more I started talking to other parents about this it became clear that there is a fear of anything Arab in American parenting. I noticed rather quickly that one of the cultures often avoided in kids programs was the Arab culture. In rearing our daughter to be compassionate and globally minded, it was important to my husband and me that she be protected from stereotypes and misunderstood cultures. 1/7/2024 0 Comments Nikki nikki temboNamed after a talking cat from the cartoon He Man, it existed from Summer 1985 to Fall 1991. It is possible that the version of the story by Paul Wing may have been the source of this misunderstanding or at least responsible for popularizing it. The inadvertent misrepresentation of a Japanese folktale as a Chinese one may explain why many native Chinese speakers have felt the story to be offensive as it inaccurately depicts their language and history. It has been suggested that the story probably originated from the Japanese folktale Jugemu instead of a Chinese folktale. A 1961 Golden Press variation of the story has the boy's name as "Sticky Sticky Stumbo." It seems that this same story has been retold many times in many variations, subsequent to that time period, which is perhaps the origin of the "Tikki Tikki." variety ( Mosel, Arlene (2007), Tikki Tikki Tembo (paperback ed.), Square Fish ). It was available as an RCA Camden recording in the mid-1940s (RCA – Camden CAL 1044). "Nikki Nikki Tembo No So Rembo Oo Ma Moochi Gamma Gamma Goochi" is the name of a little Chinese boy in a story called "Long Name No Can Say" narrated by Paul Wing. However, it has also received criticism that it "reinforces the stereotype that Asian names sound like nonsense syllables," especially since the name of the title character is a string of sounds quite unlike actual Chinese. In 1997, the book was selected by The New York Times on its list of the 50 best children's books of the previous 50 years. The supposed lesson is that one reason Chinese names are often short and one syllable is because of the time it took for his brother to explain to people what happened to Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo as a result of his outrageously long name. He then goes to get the Old Man with the Ladder and uses the ladder to get Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo out of the well in the nick of time. The little brother runs to their mother and shouts that "Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo has fallen into the well" over and over again because she can't hear him. Some time later, the boys are again playing near the well, and this time, the older brother falls in. Chang falls into the well and his older brother runs to their mother and eventually, Chang is rescued. A boy named Tikki Tikki Tembo-no Sa Rembo-chari Bari Ruchi-pip Peri Pembo and his little brother, Chang, are playing near a well, despite being warned by their mother not to. According to the story, it was custom in ancient China for parents to honor their firstborn sons with long, elaborate names that everyone was obliged to say completely-no nicknames, no shortening of any kind-while the second-born sons were usually given short, unimportant names. Tikki Tikki Tembo is a story set in ancient China that provided the basis for a 1968 book by Arlene Mosel, illustrated by Blair Lent. For the 1894 Rudyard Kipling story, see Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. Different varieties of rice contain different types and ratios of starches (amylose and amylopectin), which influence the rate at which they are digested-the higher the proportion of amylose starch, the slower the rate of digestion, and the lower the glycemic index. “In the US, we are fortunate to have supermarket shelves stocked with a wide variety of products, and this is certainly true with rice. Though traditionally associated with South East Asian foods, it will goes perfectly with any Asian foods, and even Indian food if you don’t have basmati rice.Nicola McKeown, PhD, associate professor and director of the Friedman School’s Nutritional Epidemiology Program, replies: Use for all things Thai, Vietnamese dishes, stir fries, and use for fried rice like Nasi Goreng. If you skip this, the grains are wet and slightly hard in the middle įluff! Use a rubber spatula or rice paddle – this stops the grains breaking (Jasmine rice is softer than most white rices). Stand 10 minutes to let the rice finish cooking. You want the whole surface to be rippling, the edges bubbling and white foam ĬOVER and turn to LOW – Turn heat down and cover, cook 12 minutes. RAPID SIMMER – Put water and rice in saucepan, bring to simmer on high heat as fast as you can. Once you get the rice and water ratio right, then the steps are exactly the same as cooking normal white rice and basmati rice: Repeat 3 to 4 times – water will never be completely clear. Place rice in bowl, fill with water. Swish with hand then drain. If you need to rinse the rice to clean it, if you just can’t break the habit, or if your Asian mother would have your head if you didn’t, here’s how: For an extra 2% fluffiness, it’s just not worth it (in my humble opinion). No need to clean if you buy retail – If you buy rice at the store in shiny plastic packets, your rice should already be clean – and that includes less starch too. Only rinse IF you buy your rice direct from a rice farm, or similar, to remove debris and anything that night remain from the processing and It would not be noticeable to most people Rinsing vs no rinsing – rinsing yields a barely noticeable marginal improvement in fluffiness. If you rinse AND soak for 1 hour, you must reduce the water by 3 tablespoons (ie 1 1/4 cups minus 3 tablespoons) If you rinse, you must reduce the water by 2 tablespoons to factor in the extra water than remains in the rice (ie 1 1/4 cups water minus 2 tablespoons) No rinsing – if you use 1 1/4 cups of water for every 1 cup of jasmine rice, your rice will be fluffy even without rinsing NO it is not! I have made so much rice in my time verifying this exact fact. Yes, 1/4 cup really makes a difference! I made a lot of overly soft jasmine rice in my life that I was never really happy with until I finally figured this out.īusting an age old myth here – that rinsing the rice is mandatory for fluffy rice. So while most rice is cooked with 1.5 cups of water for each cup of rice, for jasmine rice, it’s reduced to 1 1/4 cups of water. What most people do not know is that jasmine rice is softer than most white rice, which means you need less water in order for the rice to cook so it’s soft and fluffy, rather than gummy on the outside. The secret for how to cook jasmine rice perfectly It’s also used to make Thai fried rice and Pineapple Fried Rice which is the other recipe I’m sharing today! It’s strongly associated with Thai food, and used for serving with everything from Thai marinated chicken to Chilli Basil Stir Fry, Satay Skewers and the many Thai curries out there. Even when reading the screenplay, there’s no hint Verbal is lying because such details are so minuscule. The film utilizes a simple framing device - Verbal Kint confessing everything he knows about his crew and the crimes they’ve committed. You can read the full screenplay to see how this flawed narrator reads on the page. The reason for the deception is clear, and perhaps the best example of it is The Usual Suspects. You may see it in films like Gone Girl or Wonderland where a character has committed a crime and needs to avoid authorities. This is a narrator who deceives the audience and/or other characters to save his or her own skin. The first type of narrator we’ll look at is someone who lies for obvious reasons: the Self-Preservationist. WHAT IS AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR? 1/7/2024 0 Comments Ford escape hybridWhereas the 2008 hybrid version of the Ford Escape exhibited a slight shudder when its gas engine started, the 2009 Escape Hybrid’s engine comes on more smoothly the main ways to tell it’s on are by looking at the tachometer or listening for its quiet drone. Operating the air conditioning in its regular mode will keep the gas engine on more frequently, but pressing the system’s “Econ” button allows you to enjoy air conditioning as well as more electric-only operation than you’d otherwise get. The Escape Hybrid moves in near silence on electric power alone at low speeds and can even do so when going up a gradual incline. Total system output is 177 horsepower, and a continuously variable automatic transmission is standard. It’s a refined system that smoothly blends power to propel the SUV. Starting with 2009 models, the Escape Hybrid uses a gas/electric powertrain that consists of a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor. Badges on the sides and liftgate clue people in that this is a hybrid, but otherwise it looks much like a regular Escape (see a side-by-side comparison with a 2009 Escape). Design cues include large front and rear fender flares, and, on the Limited trim, a chrome grille that flows into the front bumper.Īs opposed to GM, which slathers its full-size SUV hybrids with stickers and badges, Ford has shown some restraint in distinguishing the Escape Hybrid from regular Escapes. While Ford has improved the model for 2009, interior quality remains one of the Escape Hybrid’s shortcomings.Ĭompared to some of its small SUV competitors, the hybrid version of the Ford Escape has maintained a relatively traditional SUV appearance with its upright grille and angular profile, and this should be appealing to those who like the rugged look of an SUV but the better gas mileage of a hybrid. Aside from some hybrid-specific drivetrain characteristics, the Escape Hybrid drives like a conventional small Sport Utility Vehicle. I tested an all-wheel version of the new Limited trim level of the Escape Hybrid and found that the EPA’s fuel economy estimates are easily within reach. What’s an SUV shopper to do? If you’re not ready to downsize to a small vehicle, the 2009 Ford Escape Hybrid remains one of the most efficient small SUVs available today, with an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 34/31 mpg city/highway for the front-wheel-drive model and fuel economy of 29/27 mpg for ones with all-wheel drive. Small SUVs are relatively efficient compared to their larger counterparts, but even in a model like that, topping off the tank can get pricey when gas is above $4 a gallon - as it is in many places around the country. 1/6/2024 0 Comments Cliffs travelers rest scFound along the Swamp Rabbit Trail, the market has been running since 2009, steadily growing over the years.
